Kialla Park Honour Boards

Shepparton Honour Boards


Shepparton Park Bowls Club Inc

The Shepparton Park Bowls Club was formed from the merger of the Kialla Park Bowls Club and the Shepparton Bowling Club, and the inaugural Annual General Meeting was held on May 17th 2004. Office bearers elected at that meeting can be seen on the Club Honour Board. The combined membership was approximately 160 members.

The City Council wanted the land occupied by the Shepparton Bowling Club and adjacent croquet club for other purposes. The two clubs approached the Council and proposed a merger, and the Council offered to support this by providing facilities for the new Club at the Kialla Park site, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect. Initially the Club operated out of the two sites of the former clubs. 

The present clubrooms were built by the Greater Shepparton City Council, and the club took possession in March 2006. In 2010 work commenced on Stage 2 of the development at the Kialla site, with the construction of an under-cover artificial green. This project was completed in 2010, with the handover from Council to the Club on November 17th 2010. We had an official opening by the Mayor of Shepparton, Cr Geoff Dobson, on February 6th 2011.

The Kialla Park Bowls Club was formed in 1984. It had its own greens, but it shared the clubroom facility with the Kialla Park Community and Sports Club. This club comprised community membership, cricket, baseball, rugby and tennis clubs as well as the bowls club.
 

Shepparton Bowling Club logoThe Shepparton Bowling Club was formed in 1893. It occupied a site near the Victoria Lake Park until the time of the merger. The ladies section was formed in 1950. It was the oldest bowls club in the district.


The honour boards from each of the former Clubs have been copied below. The original boards were offered to the local historical society and museum. They accepted a few, mainly because the older Shepparton boards included the names of many prominent Shepparton citizens who have since passed on. 

All boards from both Clubs were photographed so that they could be displayed in the 'history' section, or foyer, of the new Clubhouse.

The other boards were not required by the new Club, so the decision was taken to burn them and keep the 'ashes' in this urn in the Clubhouse with the photographs of the boards.
